Hear no evil at SOTA Art Gallery
Raining, go where? SOTA Art Gallery popped up just as we were trying to find a place to hide in.
“Let’s go in,” I told Pangzi. SOTA Art Gallery looked brand new, and I was elated about my accidental find.
“But Daddy, it’s raining,” he protested.
Precisely!
It turned out SOTA Art Gallery was more than a hiding place from the downpour.
Nestled within Singapore’s one and only School of the Arts, the exhibition space is a nice complement to the impressively designed building, featuring contemporary art from students and graduates.
You’ll have to go up the slope or stairs to reach the second floor to find the place. I guess on rainy days like this, you’d appreciate it being on higher ground.
From now till Dec 27, 2015, SOTA Art Gallery is displaying masterpieces from its visual arts graduating cohort specialising in ceramics, design, media arts, painting and sculpture.
On the day of our chance visit, the December rain was kept out alright, but the thunder god was still roaring.
“Daddy, I’m scared!”
“I’m scared too. Don’t break anything that I can’t afford!”
So Pangzi went on checking out SOTA Art Gallery while trying to block out the thunder.
“Daddy, why did they bring the beach here?” he asked about a sand exhibit.
“If you continue cupping your ears, how are you going to play with the stones?” I shrugged.
Stubbornly, he had his hands pressed against his ears the entire time. Not even Lee Kuan Yew could change his mind.
“How old already? Still scared of thunder.”
“I can’t hear you, Daddy!”
“See, light sabres from Star Wars…”
“I can’t hear you, Daddy!”
“Interesting, this collection of… rubber bands.”
“I can’t hear you, Daddy!”
“Singapore in the future looks like this. Flying objects everywhere.”
“I can’t hear you, Daddy!”
“Okay, consider this tour of SOTA Art Gallery your Christmas present.”
“No! That’s not what you promised!”
Thought you can’t hear me?
